It is well known fact that fairytales and stories from our childhood years are never erased. Within creators they reside and remould themselves with different elements: The fairytale-images contrived their space and spread through Marios Voutsinas work. The story-tellers naïveté united with skill as well as various materials, gave birth to new images and brought new life to old ones. The dream of old times coexists with the lucite of modernity. The artist’s work has been filling gallery rooms throughout his creative years, and before time renders it oblivious, it is gathered here.

THE MAN / THE ARTIST

Marios Angelos Voutsinas was born in Paris and studied Interior Architecture. His involvement in jewelry design and miniature sculpture dates from 1974. His work is held by private collections around the world (the Pierides Collection; the Claude & Sydney Picasso Collection; the Karen Burke Goulandris Collection and so forth). He has collaborated with the Benaki Museum Art Shops for many years.

Involved with equal passion in the creation of jewelry and of objects, Marios Voutsinas continues with persistence and knowledge with a foot in both these creative worlds, maintaining a creative artistic equilibrium with no preset points. He retains eclectic elements of Art Nouveau and Art Deco as well as references to well-loved foreign artists such as Alphonse Mucha, René Lalique, Fulco di Verdura and Jean Schlumberger, or his preferred representatives of the Greek Thirties generation; and creates jewelry that is unique in its rituals of line and materials, which composes a distinct universe, a tender handmade shell, inviting visitors to a gradual revelation, rewarding them by immersing them excitingly in a progression of perpetual prestidigitational processes and transformations of the most heterogeneous materials: lace, which through a lost-wax process is transformed into a tracery of precious metal; silver and bronze bows, which preserve intact the remembrance of how they rustled as textiles; semi-precious stones, mother-of-pearl buttons and fragile porcelain; intricate wood carved parts of fruit trees and dull pieces and parts of old crystal: all compose the instantly recognizable creative world of Voutsinas, with its own distinct theatrical aura.

The Feature

reality check
text by Dr Kostas Prapoglou, curator

imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality
—- Lewis Carroll, through the mouth of Cheshire Cat, Alice in Wonderland, 1865

Badtime stories (2021) by Marios Voutsinas divulges to the greatest extent our relationship with time, and how oftentimes this can be an utterly subjective situation. Distilled with a dry sense of humour, the installation is a conglomeration of uncountable wrist watches, meticulously woven into the metallic mesh of a bed mattress, all showing a different time. While we are challenged by the profound number of the collected items, we concurrently sense the awkwardness of timelessness, especially when we experience it during our sleep, where time, space and other subsequent impediments are expanded and annulled.

The true value of a human being can be found in the degree to which he has attained liberation from the self.
